Bucharest (Romania) - Romanian police are hunting for an ice hockey player who allegedly beat to death a man he claimed was a bad driver, police officials and his club confirmed Tuesday.

The incident occurred Sunday when Florin Stanici of Bucharest's Sportul Studentesc ice hockey club was in his car heading to Bucharest and he got into an altercation with another driver he encountered on the road near the Transylvanian city of Brasov, 150 kilometers (94 miles) north of Bucharest.

Stanici allegedly got out of his car and beat the man over the head with a baseball bat, a police statement said. He then fled the scene.
The driver, whose identity was not released, was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries, the statement said.
Ioan Marin, coach of the Sportul Studentesc, said he believed the player would turn himself in to police.
Police issued an arrest warrant and have alerted border points, fearing Stanici may try to leave the country. His wife is a ballerina in Italy, daily Cronica Romana reported.
