Rome - A former prostitute who moved the pope with a desperate plead to help other women forced to work in the red light sector died of AIDS in a Naples hospital, Italian media reported Wednesday.

Nigerian-born Anna Enonoja said she had contracted the virus that causes AIDS from one of her clients. She died after a long illness at the age of 32.

Anna made the headlines last May when, with the help of a priest, she dodged Vatican security guards and approached the pope in Saint Peter's square.

During the Jubilee ceremony she asked the pontiff to do something to help the tens of thousands of young immigrants forced into prostitution each day. Pope John Paul II, visibly moved, caressed her hair and kissed her hands before blessing her.
